Story :
Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock)
is a mission specialist who is on her first trip into outer space. She
is tasked with the service of the Hubble Telescope and she is
accompanied on this spacewalk by the fun loving Mission Commander
Matthew Kowalski (George Clooney). Matthew is a space veteran and this is his final mission.
A routine spacewalk turns into a nightmare when
space debris from a blown up russian satellite heads their way at
terrifying speed. Flying debris in outer space can be devastatingly
dangerous and Dr. Ryan Stone experiences this first hand.
The debris destroys the Space Shuttle and claims a few casualties. Only Dr. Stone
and Matthew survive. Together, they must battle falling oxygen levels,
overwhelming odds and equipment failure. Their only hope?? The
International Space Station and the Chinese Space Station.
Can they reach the ISS or the Chinese Space Station in time? That is the story of this sic-fi thriller
Plus Points :
The movie can only be described as a breathtaking
trip into outer space. The visuals are so overwhelmingly phenomenal.
After James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’, this is the first film that is truly
worth watching in 3D.
George Clooney and Sandra Bullock have done a great job in the film. But their acting skills play second fiddle to the storytelling ability of Alfonso Cuaron and the cinematography of Emmanuel Lubezki.
The zero gravity simulation is perfect. Objects and
people float around exactly as they should and nothing seems artificial.
Attention to detail is phenomenal. In one scene, Sandra Bullock loses hope and cries. The tears from her eyes form round droplets and float around her, just as they would in real life.
There are no loopholes in the plot. In fact, it is
quite an achievement to narrate a simple and linear storyline like this
in such a thrilling manner. Despite the stunning 3D effects and the
grand visuals, emotional connect never takes a backseat. Viewers will
connect strongly with Sandra Bullock’s character. Her fears become our
fears and her triumphs will make us cheer.
Minus Points :
There is nothing bad about this film. If I have to
look for a fault, perhaps it would be George Clooney’s limited screen
presence.
Technical Aspects :
Each and every technical department has performed
exceptionally in the film. The cinematography is outstanding, like I
already said. Editing is neat and clever. Background score is perfectly
in sync with the emotion of the scene and the dialogues are very nice.
Alfonso Cuaron has set a new benchmark for screenplay and direction with this movie. It will be a big disappointment if he does not pick up the oscar for Best Director.
Verdict :
There are good films and then there are great films. But very rarely, we might just be lucky enough to watch a film that sets a new standard for filmmaking. ‘Gravity’ is one such movie. This film is a once in a lifetime experience. Do watch ‘Gravity’ in the best theater that is available in your city. It is a breathtaking journey into outer space.
